Disney Plus Drama ‘Tyrant’
The movie series ‘The Witch’, which attracted 5.98 million viewers, has returned as a drama.
The Disney Plus 4-part drama ‘Tyrant’, released on the 14th, is an action thriller about the secret project of Tyrant, who modifies the human body and turns it into a human weapon. It is the online video service (OTT) debut of director Park Hoon-jung, who directed the ‘The Witch’ series, which was watched by 3.18 million people for the first part in 2018 and 2.8 million people for the second part in 2022.
The new work shares the same worldview as ‘The Witch’, where human weapons emerge due to a secret project. Just as ‘The Witch’ featured Gu Ja-yoon (Kim Da-mi), a high school girl with incredible powers, ‘Tyrant’ captivates audiences by featuring the blunt superhuman female Chae Ja-kyung (Jo Yoon-soo) as its main character. At the production press conference held on the 15th of last month, Director Park said, “‘Tyrant’ is an extension of the ‘Witch’ series. It’s a story about people at opposite ends of the same worldview.” However, since the characters do not overlap, it is easy to understand even if you haven’t seen the previous work.
The new work begins with Director Choi (Kim Seon-ho), the head of a secret organization within the National Intelligence Service, having the Tyrant sample stolen from the NIS headquarters. Director Choi mobilizes Yeon Mo-yong (Mu Jin-seong), who was expelled from the NIS due to corruption, to retrieve the sample. Then, Paul (Kim Kang-woo), an agent of an American intelligence agency who was supposed to take over the Tyrant project from the NIS, sets out to find the sample. Tension begins to flow as conflicts arise between Director Choi and Paul.
The appeal is the splendid spectacle. The scenes of Korean and American human weapons with superhuman strength breaking concrete walls and blowing people away are as thrilling as the heroic scenes from Marvel Comics. The shooting scenes between the National Intelligence Service and American intelligence agents are also realistic.
Another feature is that the approximately 2 hour and 40 minute work is divided into 4 episodes. Each episode’s opening and ending include exciting scenes to keep the tension high. This differentiates it from the movie ‘The Witch’, where the action only comes after the middle part, by utilizing the characteristics of OTT. Director Park said, “I had a hard time because I was making a movie,” but added, “I think the ending of each episode was edited incredibly.”
Actor Cha Seung-won, who plays the role of former National Intelligence Service agent ‘Im Sang’, also stands out. Im Sang usually wears loose clothes with a 2:8 parting and acts like an ordinary middle-aged man. What’s more, he often makes jokes that make people laugh with his laid-back speech. He may look at a picture of a target that he has to eliminate and say, “You’re handsome,” but he quickly turns into a cold-blooded man when a battle breaks out. Cha Seung-won said at a press conference on the 14th, “It’s important for an actor to act creatively, but there has to be someone who makes that acting more creative for it to shine,” and “I liked that Director Park allowed me a lot of room to express myself (with ad-libs, etc.).”
The content industry is paying attention to whether the new work can reproduce the glory of ‘Moving’, which brought popularity to Disney Plus last August. The new work ranked 2nd on Disney Plus on the OTT analysis site ‘Kinolights’ immediately after its release on the 14th. However, the high level of violence is an obstacle to its success. The scenes of brutally murdering opponents and not hesitating to torture them may be burdensome to some viewers.
