Concern grows in Europa because of the impact that iPhone 12 may have in the health. This Wednesday, France ordered to suspend the sale of this mobile phone after a national investigation detected that the model emits certain levels of radiation higher than what is considered safe for the human body. Other countries could follow a similar path.

Apple rejects the conclusions reached by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) and has alleged that multiple studies such as that of the World Health Organization (OMS) have not established that the iPhone 12 has adverse health effects. However, the Californian technology giant has responded to pressure from Paris by committing this Friday to update the device’s software, a move with which it seeks to adapt to French testing methods and end the dispute.

France has welcomed that change, but that has not been enough to curb the fear that its warning has sparked in other members of the European Union (EU). Some are already mobilizing. It is the case of Germany. Its body dedicated to regulating telecommunications has contacted the French authorities to coordinate and try to find a solution at European level.

It is not clear if that response involves asking Apple to update the iPhone 12 software in all EU territories. Who does seem to have it in their sights is Italia. Government sources they have targeted Reuters that Rome plans to contact the firm of the bitten apple to carry out the update on the mobile phones in its country.

Parallel investigations

Other countries have chosen to open their own investigations. This is the case of Belgium and the Netherlands. The latter, through the Dutch Digital Infrastructure Authority, are already carrying it out and their results are expected within two weeks.

In Spain, for the moment it has been the Organization of consumers and users (OCU) the only voice that has demanded the withdrawal of the iPhone 12 from stores. EL PERIÓDICO DE CATALUNYA, from the Prensa Ibérica group, has consulted with the Spanish authorities and is waiting to have more information about what path the Government will take.

The French investigation analyzed 141 iPhone 12 devices – a model that began selling in 2020 – and concluded that sustained contact could be dangerous. That warning has truncated Apple’s plans, which wanted this to be a week marked only by the presentation of the new iPhone 15. In the last five days the company’s shares have fallen 3.46%.
