A historic achievement for Israel’s women’s water polo team. The players of Dimitris Mabrutas beat the Kazakhstan team tonight (Thursday) at 8:19 in the crossover match of the World Cup in Berlin, and qualified for the “Super Finals” tournament that will be held in Long Beach, California, on June 23-25.

Unlike the games in the group stage, where the team defeated the opponents easily, tonight the game was closer. Israel took a 0:2 lead and at the end of the first quarter led 1:3, much with the help of the excellent ability of the national team captain Ayelet Peres in the goal. The second quarter continued to be close, but Israel managed to make another escape, and at halftime it was 3:7.

The Kazakhstan team started the third quarter better and managed to reduce the difference to only two goals. Israel responded with no less than six goals on the other side and at the end of the third quarter the scoreboard showed a promising 5:13 for the team in blue and white. The Israeli team also won the last quarter and increased the difference until the end.

The goalkeeper and team captain Ayelet Peres, who was chosen as the outstanding player of the game, said at the end: “We came to secure the place in Long Beach and we achieved it. We started the game very strong, we kept the momentum and we won.” The captain added: “We are very excited for the tournament in the USA in June and for the World Championship in Japan in July.”
