The organization said that as of yesterday, Saturday, 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox had been reported from 12 member countries where the virus is not usually endemic, adding that it will provide more guidance and recommendations in the coming days for countries on how to limit the spread of monkeypox.

She explained, “The available information indicates that transmission of infection from one person to another occurs between people who are in close physical contact with cases who show symptoms.”

WHO official David Heyman told Reuters that an international panel of experts met via a video conference to consider what needs to be studied about the outbreak and inform the public, including whether there is any asymptomatic spread, who is most at risk, and the different ways of transmission.

The main cause of disease transmission

He also added that close contact is the main route of transmission of the disease, because the typical lesions of the disease are highly contagious, pointing out that parents who take care of sick children, for example, are at risk, as are health workers, and for this reason some countries have started vaccinating sick treatment teams. He stressed that the outbreak of this disease is not at all similar in any way to the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, because it is not easily transmitted. He said those who suspect they may have been exposed, or who are showing symptoms including rash and fever, should avoid close contact with others.

“There are vaccines available, but the most important message is that you can protect yourself,” he added.
