The number of people in the world today has reached 8 billion, with India expected to overtake China next year and become the most populous country in the world. This is according to forecasts published by the United Nations.

The world’s population has tripled since 1950, partly due to the increase in life expectancy resulting from improved sanitary conditions and access to drinking water from the development of vaccines and antibiotic drugs, and improved nutrition.

According to UN data, between 1990 and 2019, the average life expectancy increased by almost nine years, to 72. However, in poor countries the life expectancy is 7 years lower on average, due to widespread infant mortality, wars and the AIDS virus.

In 2021, the average life expectancy decreased by a year, to 71, mainly due to the corona epidemic. According to estimates, life expectancy in 2050 will be 77 on average.

Although the world’s population has reached its highest level in history, its growth rate is the lowest since 1950, and families are having fewer children. According to UN estimates, the world population is expected to reach a peak of 10.4 billion people in 2080, and remain at this level until 2100.

Two thirds of the people in the world live in countries where a woman has two children on average, compared to five children on average in 1950. The population aged 65 plus is expected to grow by 6% until 2050.

8 countries will be responsible for about half of the population growth by 2050 – Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.

The two most populated regions in the world in 2022 are South and East Asia – with China and India having 1.4 billion people in each country. However, according to UN forecasts, the number of residents in China will begin to decline in 2023, and India will overtake it.
