It didn’t take long for Xavi to publicly respond to Barcelona president Juan Laporte after he announced his intention to renew the coach’s contract even if he didn’t win La Liga. Xavi emphasized that if he won nothing, it would not make sense for the club to renew his contract.
“I’m ready to be in Barcelona all my life, it’s my home, but I depend on the results. Aporta my friend and Barca are lucky to have a president like him. It’s not about the money or the length of the contract, I just want the team to succeed, and as soon as I feel I can’t convince the players, I’ll go home. First we will bring results and then we will talk about my future”, he said Xavi modestly
The coach commented on his work: “I’m always judged and criticized, it’s hard, I have a family and small children. There are many moments when it doesn’t pay to be a Barcelona coach, especially when you’re a fan like me. It’s hard to be told that you’re not good or that you don’t have character, sometimes you don’t know about the criticism until your friends call you and tell you that they’re ‘killing you’.”
The coach concluded: “The hardest days of my life were as a Barcelona coach, I sometimes asked myself if it was worth it, I don’t need anything financial and just want to help the club. If anyone represents Barca’s DNA, it’s me. I want the team to hold the ball and I have a cold sweat when it doesn’t happen, but football is not a spectacle, there is an opponent trying to disrupt you. I will never betray the style that characterized me. Real Madrid? We would all sign such a gap in March, I am proud of my team.”
