The writer Antonio Gala dies at the age of 92

The playwright, novelist, poet and essayist Antonio Gala has died this Sunday at the age of 92, as confirmed by the Board of Trustees of the Antonio Gala Foundation and the family through a statement. The burning chapel will be installed in the hall of the Antonio Gala Foundation and will be open on Monday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Precocious writer, at the age of five he wrote a short story and at the age of seven, his first play. At 14 he gave a lecture at the Círculo de la Amistad in Córdoba. In 1951, at the age of 15, he entered the University of Seville with a degree in Law and enrolled freely in Madrid in two other courses: Philosophy and Letters and Political and Economic Sciences. During his university years he published his first poems in the magazines of the time – ‘Escorial’, ‘Platero’, ‘Cántico’ – and founded two magazines: ‘Aljibe’ and ‘Arquero de Poesía’, with Gloria Fuertes and Julio Mariscal Montes.

Once he graduated, he started the examinations for State attorney following his father’s mandate, but abandoned it in the second year. During the following years he lived in Jerez de la Frontera and Córdoba. When returning to Madrid taught philosophy and art history in different schools to earn a living. In 1962 he left for Italy, where he lived for almost a year.

By now, Antonio Gala had written the book of poems ‘Enemigo íntimo’ (1959), for which he received an accesit to the Adonáis de Poesía prize. In the spring of 1963, when he returned to Spain, he received the Las Albinas prize for his story ‘Solsticio de verano’. In July he was granted the Calderón de la Barca National Award for his comedy ‘The green fields of Eden’. One started like this long and fruitful career as a playwright during which he wrote works like ‘Rings for a lady’ (1973) and ‘Petra Regalada’ (1980).

With his first novel, ‘The crimson manuscript’ (1990), he won the Planeta prize. Later they will arrive ‘The Turkish passion’ (1994), ‘Beyond the garden’ (1995), ‘The rule of three’ (1996), ‘The outskirts of God’ (1999), ‘The impossible to forget’ (2001 ) i ‘The guests in the garden’ (2002). Later, he will publish ‘The owner of the wound’ (2003) and ‘The pedestal of the statues’ (2007).

In his poetic work there are books published at an early age, ‘Enemigo íntimo’ and other more recent ones: ‘Poemas cordobeses’ (1994), ‘El águila bicepfala: Textos de amor’ (1994), ‘Poemas de amor’ ( 1997) and ‘The poem of Tobías desangelado’ (2005). In addition to the Adonáis, Planeta and Calderón de la Barca awards, he has also received, among others, the following awards: Barcelona City Award (1965); Theater Forum award (1971); National Literature Award, Spectator award and Critic award (1972); Quijote de Oro prize (1972-73); Antena de Oro award and Mayte award (1973); National Scriptwriting Award (1973) and Audiovisual Media Award (1976).
