Writer Gilles Perrault has died at the age of 92, his family announced on Thursday. “I confirm to you that he died at the age of 92 last night on August 3 from cardiac arrest in the Channel”, indicated his family circle, confirming information from West France.

Novelist, screenwriter and journalist, Gilles Perrault is the author of “Pull-over rouge” (1978), a fictionalized investigation into the Christian Ranucci affair, sentenced to death and then executed in July 1976 for the kidnapping and murder, committed two years ago, of an eight-year-old girl. A fervent supporter of the abolition of the death penalty, Perrault suggests in his novel that Ranucci was the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

The publication of the book had weighed heavily in the 1970s in favor of the abolition of the death penalty in France. Before writing, Gilles Perrault also began a career as a lawyer under the name of Jacques Peyroles. After five years at the bar, he finally turned to writing, beginning a career that would prove prolific with nearly a hundred novels published.
