BODEGRAVEN – On Wednesday evening September 21, the performance about dementia ‘Adhesive Tape & Polaroid’ took place in the Evertshuis in Bodegraven. No fewer than 190 people attended this special evening of the Alzheimer Café.

The viewers experienced how the lives of two partners, one of whom has dementia, entails major changes. From angry outbursts, fearful moments, physical limitations to clear, precious and loving moments. The theater company Vliegeren met Tegenwind performed this lifelike, which resulted in a quiet room.

Afterwards, the visitors could ask questions and give their reactions. A visitor with dementia said: “It was like seeing my own life on stage, lots of recognizable moments. Well done”. Another couple said: “Good to know, but also confrontational, what can still await us”.

Alzheimer Cafés

This performance was a special edition of Alzheimer Café Midden-Holland in the context of World Alzheimer’s Day, made possible by various financial contributions. An Alzheimer Café is organized every month in Gouda, Reeuwijk and Bodegraven. Every month there is a different theme with a speaker, and various activities are organized. Case manager and volunteer Petra Vane: “The themes range from exercise to legal matters to how do you stay in balance as a caregiver. We draw on our clients’ stories and listen carefully to the issues at stake. In the cafes we hope to help more people with this by providing them with the right information and advice. Everybody is welcome”. The next cafe is October 17 in Gouda.
