Placen was born on August 31, 1927.
As stated in the National Encyclopedia, Placen was a luminous character comedian whose talent is characterized by inexhaustible fantasy, improvisational abilities, bright sense of humor and artistic temperament.
He studied at the Jānis Zālīš six-year primary school in Sausnės, and later at the Vestiena Agricultural and Livestock School. At the technical school of beekeeping and horticulture in Vecbebru, Placens obtained a diploma of beekeeper agronomist, and also actively participated in theater performances at the technical school. In 1947, though, he entered the Latvian Theater and Choreography Secondary School.
in 1951, Placens became an actor at the Daile Theater. The encyclopedia says that Placen’s talent was more used in comic roles. He played on the Daile Theater stage for almost 70 years.
The short television documentary “Gunārs Placens” in the series of portrait films “Dominante” was shot about the actor.
During the Soviet occupation, Placens received several awards, but after the regaining of Latvia’s independence, he received the lifetime Achievement Award of the annual theater award ceremony “Spielmaņu nakts”, as well as the Order of the Three Stars of the IV class and the Barricade Medal.
