A special concert will be held at Jinkwansa Temple in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, a place with a thousand-year history. This event was created with the purpose of re-examining and revisiting the true face of Jinkwansa Temple through music that appropriately blends tradition and modernity.

The Seoul Cultural Foundation (Chairman Park Sang-won) and Jingwansa Temple (Chief Monk Beophae) will hold a concert titled ‘Jingwan Aesthetics’ in front of the main hall of Jingwansa Temple at 6:30 PM on the 21st.

This is the 20th year, and popular talent Park Sang-won, the chairman, took charge as the artistic director and directed the performance. Chairman Park said, “Jingwansa Temple, built by King Hyeonjong, the 8th king of Goryeo, is located in the embrace of Samgaksan Mountain (Bukhansan Mountain), which connects Baekundae, Insubong, and Manggyeongdae,” and “There are few temples in Seoul that are as beautiful in all four seasons as this one.”

He continued, “This concert is aesthetic in that it aims to reaffirm the things we’ve missed: the tiles of Jinkwansa Temple, the Dancheong (painted paint on the walls), the sound of the stream, and the history within it,” adding, “With this meaning in mind, I named this concert’s theme ‘Jinkwan Aesthetics.’”

Choi Yeo-wan, a vocalist of Jeongga (songs, lyrics, sijo, etc.) from Seoul National University’s Department of Korean Traditional Music, gayageum artist Joo Bo-ra, and the Ewha Womans University Korean Traditional Music Center String Orchestra will also appear, showing a world of music that cannot usually be experienced. Chairman Park said, “We have carefully selected promising young and talented musicians,” and “Their jazz, classical guitar, and gayageum sounds will not shake the temple and will penetrate the history of Jinwansa Temple.”

The concert will also be attended by ambassadors from 30 countries. Anyone can attend and there is no admission fee. Chairman Park said, “We will continue to create future performances in Seoul’s historical spaces that have stories.”
