Iranian activist Nergis Muhammedi, who was awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize and is in prison for her work on women’s rights, received her award on behalf of the activist.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Iranian Nargis Mohammedi for her work on women’s rights.

At the ceremony held at Oslo City Hall in Oslo, the capital of Norway, the award received by activist Muhammedi was given to her 17-year-old twin children Ali and Kiana Rahmani, who are in exile in Paris.
Kiana Rahmani read the letter written by her mother at the press conference. In the letter, Muhammadi thanked journalists and media workers, whom he described as his “greatest and most important allies” in his fight against the “destructive tyranny” of the Iranian government.

In his letter, Muhammadi emphasized that Iranian society needs “global support” and said:

“You, journalists and media professionals, are our greatest and most important allies in our difficult struggle against the devastating tyranny of the government of the Islamic Republic. “I sincerely thank you for your efforts and everything you have done for us.”

Saying that she has little hope of seeing her mother again, Kiana said: “Maybe I can see her in 30 or 40 years, but I think I will never see her again. “But that doesn’t matter because my mother will always live in my heart and leave ideas worth fighting for,” he said.

On the other hand, Muhammadi’s wife told the press that the activist would go on a hunger strike in solidarity with members of the Baha’i faith, which is a minority in Iran.

WHO IS NERGIS MUHAMMEDI?

In the statement made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee on October 6, it was stated that the award was given to Muhammadi “for her struggle for oppressed women” in Iran.

Nergis Muhammedi, who stands out as an activist in Iran, is known for her work on human rights. Muhammadi, who was convicted by the Iranian judiciary of crimes such as “acting against national security and propaganda against the regime”, was last sent to prison in November 2021 after he attended the commemoration ceremony of a demonstrator who lost his life during the protests that broke out across the country due to the increase in gasoline prices in 2019.

Muhammedi, who has been held in prison since then, made statements of support from Evin Prison, where he was also held, for the protests that started after the death of a young woman named Mahsa Emini in police custody in September 2022.

Iranian officials, on the other hand, consider the anti-regime protests that have broken out from time to time for various reasons in recent years as a “conspiracy of the enemies”. Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in his statement on October 3, 2022, regarding the Mahsa Emini protests, which started in 2022 and are described as the longest-lasting protests in the country, said, “I clearly say that these events were planned by the USA, the Zionist regime and their supporters.” He used the following expressions:
