The Mayor of Merida Alejandro Ruz Castro reported that during the morning of this Friday there were already records 203 meridians in the different temporary shelters which was enabled by the Merida commune, in view of the imminent impact of the huracán Berylis the south of the city where most people are located in vulnerable situation.
“We are supervising the temporary shelters that are the responsibility of the Mérida City Council. Remember that we already have 64 of them open, 17 in Mérida and 47 in each of its police stations,” he said.

The councillor from Merida confirmed that there are already 203 people who are in some of these 64 temporary shelters, these are entire families who for some reason have moved to one of these spaces. He considered that this is part of a culture of prevention that characterizes the people of Merida.
“Even pets are being brought to shelters to be properly protected,” he said.
The mayor of Mérida said that although this figure is a number that they have shortly before noon on Friday, people who feel unsafe can request shelter in the course of the afternoon, prior to the impact of Hurricane Beryl. He said that they have a constant and permanent communication channel in this contingency both to serve the citizens through Ayuntatel, but also a close coordination with the state government to safeguard the integrity of the population in general.
He said that these temporary shelters are ready to provide a safe place for the most vulnerable people, with the aim of keeping this population calm. He pointed out that they have coordinated with elements of the Public Security Secretariat, in order to monitor the belongings and homes of those who have requested protection.

Although they have not yet received reports of power outages, he called on the population to remain vigilant and informed about Baryl’s path, not to be overconfident, and to go to one of these 64 shelters in the Yucatan capital if they feel any danger. He also indicated that they have urban cleaning and dredging crews ready to prevent flooding.
