As the days go by, green factories are increasing in the country. This time, four more Bangladeshi garment manufacturing companies have received the certificate of environment-friendly factories. With this, the number of green factories in the country stands at 224.

On Thursday (July 11), ready-made garment industry owners’ association BGMEA said, the newly recognized companies are – Anant Jeanswear Limited of Gazipur Kabi Jasim Uddin Road, Big Boss Corporation Limited of Gazipur Kashimpur Sarabo, Aptech Casualwear Limited and Basic Shirt Limited of Gazipur Sadar.

According to BGMEA data, 59 of the world’s top 100 environmentally friendly green factories i.e. more than half of the factories are in Bangladesh. 4 more companies have recently been added to this list. Out of total 224 LEED certified factories with newly added green factories, 88 are platinum rated, 122 are gold rated, 10 are silver rated and 4 are certified.

The US Green Building Council (USGBC) certifies environmentally friendly buildings as ‘LEED’. Full Form of LEAD—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. To obtain this certificate, a project must maintain the highest standards from construction to production under the supervision of the USGBC.

There are a total of 110 points for fulfilling the 9 conditions for the LEAD certificate. If above 80 points, ‘Lead Platinum’, ‘Lead Gold’ if 60-79, ‘Lead Silver’ if 50-59 and ‘Lead Certified’ if 40-49 points.

Qualifying for LEAD certification is no easy task. This requires huge investment. Another 500 factories in Bangladesh are in the process of being lead certified.
