Day by day, green factories or environment friendly factories are increasing in Bangladesh. This time, two more garment manufacturing companies have received the certificate of environment-friendly green factories. There are 226 green factories in the country. BGMEA, the association of ready-made garment industry owners, has given this information.
The two newly recognized companies are Sadatia Sweaters Limited of Diakhali area of Ashulia and Executive Greentex Limited of Mulaid area of Gazipur Sreepur upazila.
According to BGMEA data, 60 of the world’s 100 eco-friendly garment factories, i.e. more than half, are in Bangladesh. Two factories have recently been added to this list. Out of total 226 lead certified factories including newly added eco-friendly factories, 89 are platinum rated and 123 gold rated, 10 silver rated and 4 certified factories.
The US Green Building Council (USGBC) certifies environmentally friendly buildings as ‘LEED’. Full Form of LEAD—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. To receive this certification, a project must maintain the highest standards from construction to production under the supervision of the USGBC.
There are a total of 110 points for fulfilling the 9 conditions for the LEAD certificate. If above 80 points, ‘Lead Platinum’, ‘Lead Gold’ if 60-79, ‘Lead Silver’ if 50-59 and ‘Lead Certified’ if 40-49 points.
Qualifying for LEAD certification is no easy task. This requires significant investment. Another 500 factories in Bangladesh are in the process of being lead certified.
