Housing and Public Works Minister Ram Obaidul Moktadir Chowdhury said that there are 6 thousand 372 abandoned houses in Dhaka city. Among them, Mirpur area has maximum 3 thousand 582 houses.

The Minister of Housing and Public Works gave this information in response to the question of Saiful Islam, Independent Member of Parliament of Dhaka-19 Constituency on Wednesday (February 14). Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the question and answer table.

According to the information of the minister, the second highest number of abandoned houses is in Mohammadpur area. There are 1,542 abandoned houses. In addition, other abandoned houses in Gulshan, 12 in Banani, 12 in Magbazar, 3 in Tejgaon, 1 in Nakhalpara, 2 in Cantonment, Basabo 1, 3 in Khilgaon, 12 in Khilgaon, 2 in Jurine, 2 Ta, Jurain. 46, 88 in Dhanmondi, 25 in Lalmatia, 4 in Jatrabari and 1 in Maniknagar.

Meanwhile, among the abandoned houses, 4 are being used as construction institutions and 20 are being used as educational institutions, the minister said.

The public works minister also said that the reserved abandoned houses are being allocated for the construction of residential flats for the officials and the employees on the rental basis. He said that the saleable abandoned houses are being sold to various individuals/institutions, martyr families, war wounded freedom fighters and allottees with the permission of the Prime Minister. In the last three financial years, 12 crore 68 lakh 16 thousand 429 allowances have been collected from abandoned houses in Dhaka city. At this time, the price collected from the sale is 2 crore 31 lakh 2 thousand 737 taka.
