9:28 am: A new pro-European Prime Minister for Moldova

Moldova appointed a new pro-European Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, on Friday, just hours after his predecessor resigned and a Russian missile flew over his territory. In a decision apparently for internal political reasons, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita submitted her resignation in the morning after a year and a half in power.

The day before, the Moldovan intelligence services had confirmed information from kyiv that Moscow was planning to overthrow the government in Chisinau. “It’s time for me to leave”, explained the 45-year-old official to the press, referring to “a lack of support and confidence in the country”.

Former Minister of the Interior and entrepreneur in fintech, Dorin Recean, 48, will take over. Since February 2022, he has held the role of adviser to the Head of State on defense issues. He must now receive the confidence of Parliament, a vote which should go off without a hitch: the pro-European party has the support of 63 MPs out of 101 seats.
