BThe Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports further declining developments in several corona indicators in Germany. There are signs of a “further significant drop in the number of cases”, according to the Covid 19 weekly report on Thursday evening. The nationwide seven-day incidence of laboratory-confirmed cases of Sars-CoV-2 fell by almost a third in the past week compared to the first week of January.

The number of Covid 19 patients in intensive care units was also significantly lower than in the previous week, it said. According to the Divi intensive care register, there were 827 people nationwide as of Thursday. According to the RKI report, a decrease in the number of cases treated in hospital with a severe acute respiratory infection and a Covid-19 diagnosis has been observed since the week ending December 25.

With regard to virus variants, the RKI reports a further increase in the proportion of subline XBB.1.5 in Germany. It is about a previously low level of a good two percent. “Your share in the previous weeks was less than 1 percent,” it said. The data on the topic refer to the week before last and are based on a random sample.

The XBB.1.5 variant is very common in the USA. According to the EU health authority ECDC, it does not pose a major risk for most people in Europe, as stated in an assessment last week. On the other hand, there is a moderate to high risk, depending on immunity to the corona virus, for vulnerable people such as the elderly, non-vaccinated and immunocompromised.
