There are so many sugar cubes in your favorite drink

by time news

Twelve sugar cubes. That’s how many can be in your favorite can of soda. The Nutrition Center is concerned about the sugar intake of young people and has therefore started a campaign to make them aware of this problem. Because research shows that not everyone knows how much sugar there is in, for example, a pack of juice, a yogurt drink or iced coffee.

The Nutrition Center campaigns by sharing an informative poster at secondary schools. It shows that a can of cola, for example, contains 7.5 sugar cubes. 7Up contains 4, apple juice also 7.5, equal to Orange, Fernandes and therefore Cola. However, a bottle of AA drink wins: it contains no less than 12 sugar cubes.

Body does not register calories from soda

Overweight is an increasing problem among young people. These types of sugary drinks contain a lot of calories and contribute to this. This is because the body is not able to register calories from drinks properly. “In other words: young people do not eat less for the rest of the day, despite the fact that they have already consumed a lot of calories through these drinks,” says Liesbeth Velema, nutrition and behavior expert at the Nutrition Center.

“We make choices all day long about what we eat and drink, but those choices are mostly habitual behavior,” says Velema. And that is exactly what the Nutrition Center wants to change. The center is particularly concerned that there are ‘many and frequent drinkers’ of soft drinks and energy drinks. Because “an occasional drink”, that’s not the problem. “This sugar cube poster can make young people aware of the (un)healthiness of drinks and can thus stimulate new habits, such as choosing water more often,” says Velema.

Light and Zero no better, according to the Nutrition Center

Light and Zero soft drinks contain less or no sugar, but just like regular soft drinks affect the tooth enamel due to the acids they contain. That is why, like regular soft drinks, they are not included in the Wheel of Five.

The best choice? Bring a water bottle or bottle with tap water. That is good for your health, the environment and is cheap. Would you like a drink with sugar? Then opt for a small can, says the Nutrition Center.
