The Metropolitan East Prosecutor’s Office agreed with the position of the Justice Department, which accused the police of “lack of rigor” in their investigations.
Carolina Remy-Mayllet, Chief Prosecutor for Gender at the Metropolitan East Prosecutor’s Office, acknowledged that the investigation into the death of Nayara Vit contained numerous errors in its initial stage.
After the acquittal of Rodrigo del Valle, the model’s ex-partner and the main defendant in her death, which occurred in 2021, after falling from the 12th floor of the building where they lived together, was announced.
During the reading of the verdict, the court ordered the immediate release of Del Valle, accusing the police of “lack of rigor” in the work of the case.
In response to these words, the prosecutor said that “it was two months where various tests were submitted with many difficulties from the beginning of the investigation and we believe that in these situations there is always a 50-50 split.”
However, he acknowledged that they share the court’s position on the lack of rigor in the proceedings regarding the death of Nayara Vit.
“We share that opinion. Here, and not only in this case, there have been many femicides, unfortunately at a national and international level, where the gender perspective fails from the very beginning,” she argued.
Remy-Mayllet explained that “assuming that the case was suicide at first glance based on the testimonies of a couple of people, without looking at other equally important elements that did emerge that night, is clearly a mistake. Not having collected testimonies in time, looking more broadly or having specialized police officers carry out expert reports in time, is clearly a mistake from an investigative point of view.”
“The only option chosen was the theory of suicide, and it was not until eight days later that the investigation could begin as required from a gender perspective, trying to correct precisely these errors that were incurred that first night,” she said.
