There is no going back: the water level will rise even if global warming stops

by time news

A new study shows that the melting of the glaciers in Greenland will cause the sea level to rise dramatically by the end of this century – even if the countries of the world stop emitting greenhouse gases as part of the fight against global warming.

According to the study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the current global warming will cause the melting of 3.3% of the Greenland ice sheet – an amount equivalent to 110 trillion tons of ice, and as a result there will be a minimum rise in sea level worldwide in 27 s “M.

The scientists have also warned that if the melting of the glaciers in Greenland will regularly reach the peak recorded in 2012, when 97% of the entire ice sheet began to melt in an extreme heat wave recorded in July, this is expected to mean a sharp rise in sea level by 78 cm.

The study does not provide timetables for the rate of the level rise, but warns that this may happen in any case, when a real fight against the emission of the polluting gases that cause global warming will only prevent another rise that will threaten the lives of billions of people who live near the coasts.
