“Kim Ha-seong is one of the most interesting free agents this winter”
It is predicted that Ha-seong Kim, who plays in the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB), will not receive a qualifying offer (QO) from his team, the San Diego Padres.
MLB’s official website, MLB.com, predicted the target of this winter’s QO presentation on the 4th (Korean time).
Major League QO, introduced in 2012, is a system in which the original affiliated club offers a one-year contract to a free agent (FA) at the average annual salary of the top 125 highest paid players in the big league.
If the player accepts this, he or she will become a free agent again one year later. If the player refuses, the original team receives the right to be drafted in the following year as compensation.
This winter’s QO amount is $21.05 million (approximately 28.836 billion won), and the closing time is 5 p.m. on the 4th local time (7 a.m. on the 5th Korean time).
The media mentioned seven batters and seven pitchers each as ‘a decision that requires careful consideration.’ Ha-seong Kim was also included in this list.
MLB.com pointed out Kim Ha-seong, saying, “He could be one of the most interesting free agents this winter.”
Although his skills have been recognized, his physical condition is a big variable.
The media explained, “Kim Ha-seong showed excellent defensive ability by recording double-digit home runs and stolen bases for three consecutive seasons, but was unable to play in the team’s fall baseball game due to shoulder surgery,” and added, “We appointed Scott Boras as our agent.”
He continued, “If Ha-Sung Kim was healthy, San Diego would have actively considered QO, but injury issues could stop them. “San Diego is not lacking a shortstop,” he added.
Ha-seong Kim signed a contract with San Diego for 4+1 years and up to $39 million ahead of 2021. Ha-seong Kim, who spent four years in San Diego, declined the 2025 mutual option and decided to declare free agency.
Meanwhile, the media predicted that Kim Ha-seong’s teammate Jurickson Profar will be offered a QO. Propa, who entered the big league in 2012, was selected as an All-Star for the first time this year.
