Ramanathapuram–Fishermen’s grievance meeting has not been held in Ramanathapuram district collector’s office for the past few months. Due to this, they could not express their needs, grievances and complaints. The fishermen have insisted that the grievance meeting should be held again. Fishing is the main industry in Ramanathapuram district after agriculture. Rameswaram, Pampan, Mandapam, Alaghankulam and Thondi beaches are where fish are found in abundance. Most of the fish caught in these places go to foreign states. In the district, more than one lakh people are engaged in traditional fishing through 1800 power boats and 130 village folk boats. They face various problems while doing fishing. It is customary to conduct a grievance meeting under the leadership of the Collector every month to hear the needs and grievances of the fishermen and to help them. This meeting has not been held for the past few months. Some fishermen present a petition at the Kuradithir camp on Monday. The fishermen said that no action has been taken and they want to hold a grievance meeting again. Ramanathapuram Deputy Director of Fisheries Department Kathavarayan said, ‘Grievance meeting was to be held on September 23 this month. Postponed due to inability of the Collector to participate at the last moment. The fishermen’s grievance redressal meeting will be held this week,’ he said.
