A change in the rules for annual technical reviews is in the works. Due to the chaos and problems after the system change, the director of the automobile administration has already resigned. Transport Minister Georgi Gvozdeikov explained what concessions they will make in order to give a grace period for cars that cannot pass the inspection.
He was adamant that the value of harmful emissions cannot be changed because they are bound by a European directive. In search of a permanent solution, changes are proposed. One is to keep the emissions from being classified as hazardous, which will keep cars running. The other proposal is to extend the time limit for fixing this type of malfunction from 14 to 30 days. The task force, which begins work as early as Monday, must either approve the proposals or make others.
After the change in the annual roadworthiness tests, many drivers failed to pass the tests with their petrol cars – mainly because of the European requirements for the levels of harmful emissions. After the chaos and tension at the checkpoints, the Minister of Transport demanded the resignation of the head of the Automobile Administration. And he’s proposing changes starting tomorrow. “What we can do to ease people’s worries is that cars with exhaust problems are not treated as ‘dangerous’. They are put in the ‘significant’ category because they do not directly threaten road safety “, Gvozdeikov told NOVA.
This will allow these cars to continue to ply the streets. And they won’t be stopped like they have been. Gvozdeikov is categorical: changes in the threshold for harmful emissions cannot be introduced. But he is ready for more discounts.
“This period for fixing the irregularities should be extended from 14 to 30 days and for such an irregularity the car should not be stopped from moving. This is not a question of reducing values, of easing the regime, which we implement as a directive,” the minister also said.
With more permanent changes to solve the problem, a working group is already starting tomorrow. It will be tested whether the temporary measures announced by the minister will change the number of cars that do not pass the inspection. Until a permanent solution is found, concerns among drivers remain.
“I drive an old gasoline car and I’m still extremely worried,” shared Desislava.
Automobile expert Rumen Dunev said: “My advice is that before they pass the GTP, they should go to a service center where they can inspect their car. Catalysts are now available at much more affordable prices.”
And the minister explained – the director of the “Automotive Administration” Borislav Muerov is leaving not only because of the examinations. “I have noticed that he does not have enough initiative, creativity, responsibility, awareness”, pointed out Gvozdeikov.
