The president of the United States, Joe Biden, was informed about the crash of the aircraft that led to the death of the leader of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, this Wednesday (23), northwest of Moscow, and said that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, could have been involved in what happened.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, but I’m not surprised” by the news of Prigozhin’s possible death, Biden said, adding that “there’s not much that happens in Russia that Putin isn’t behind. But I don’t know enough to get the answer.”

The statement was made before confirmation of the death of Prigozhin and nine other people. The aircraft, which departed Moscow en route to St Petersburg, was carrying seven passengers and three crew members.

Disaffected by the Kremlin, Yevgeny Prigozhin led a mutiny against the highest echelons of the Russian army, on 23 and 24 June. President Vladimir Putin claimed the rebellion could have tipped Russia into civil war and described the mercenary leader as a “traitor”.

The turmoil ended when Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stepped in to broker a deal.

On Monday night (22), Prigozhin appeared in a video, published on social networks by groups close to Wagner, in which he claimed to be in Africa. In a desert landscape, he stated that he was working to “make Russia even greater on all continents, and Africa even more free”.
