According to figures provided by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), in Mexico there are 2 million 237 thousand people who have some type of visual deficiency. The six main eye problems that affect Mexicans are: senile cataract, refraction, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, corneal opacity, and glaucoma.
That is why we must try to raise awareness about the importance of ophthalmological examination in order to have an early diagnosis and treatment. This is in order to avoid, in all cases where possible, irreversible loss of vision.
The Normal 034-SSA-2002 treats eye problems from birth
These preventive measures start from birth. For this, there is the Official Mexican Standard Nom-034-SSA2-2002 for the prevention and control of birth defects. This establishes that all newborns must be examined by an ophthalmologist who will check the eyeball, visual fixation, involuntary movements of the eye, conjunctival edema, corneal and lens opacities or presence/absence of infections, among others.
When the child starts his school activity, it is necessary to carry out another visual review to detect, early, any refractive error, which can be corrected with the use of glasses. After the age of 40, an ophthalmological evaluation is also recommended to check intraocular pressure and rule out any type of condition such as: cataracts, age-related macular degeneration or cataracts.
The WHO encourages nations to offer eye care
On the other hand, diabetic or hypertensive people should visit the ophthalmologist at least once a year. This is because this sector of the population is at greater risk of suffering from diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
Finally, it should be noted that in 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) presented the World Report on Vision. The purpose of it is none other than to encourage nations to offer person-centered ophthalmological care, which ensures a continuous process of promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation interventions.
