More than 18,000 workers were looking for a job in Luxembourg in February, a month in which there were 7,227 job vacancies to be filled in the country’s companies, according to the most recent data from the Development and Employment Agency (ADEM).

Although the number of unemployed people is much higher than the number of job offers, there are professions in which it is difficult to find the right candidate.

To facilitate the search for workers with a suitable profile for these positions, ADEM annually publishes the official list of professions with the greatest lack of labor.

The 2024 list was released this Friday and contains the 24 professions (and subcategories) most sought after by employers.

The 24 professions with the most shortage of candidates:

  • Analysis of credits and banking risks;

  • Bank customer management;

  • Front office of financial markets;

  • Management of financial markets;

  • Roof installation and restoration;

  • Management and engineering studies, industrial research and development;

  • Production management and engineering;

  • Installation and maintenance of industrial equipment;

  • Hygiene care and monitoring of patients;

  • General nursing care;

  • Psychology;

  • Social action;

  • Child education;

  • Socio-educational intervention;

  • Defense and legal advice;

There is a lack of professionals especially in the finance, IT, engineering, health and personal care, social action and business support services sectors (human resources, accounting, auditing and legal consultancy).

The industry area is one of the most affected and there is a lack of qualified professionals, from engineers to development directors, as well as project and study heads, production managers, specialists in the installation and maintenance of equipment, electromechanical equipment and others.

Looking for talent abroad

Given the lack of all these professionals in the country, Luxembourg wants to hire these talents abroad, namely in third countries (outside the European Union), an objective expressed in the current Government’s coalition agreement.

In these cases, employers looking for qualified workers in the listed professions can then benefit from simplified and accelerated procedures for hiring third-country nationals, reminds ADEM.

How is this official list of professions with the greatest labor shortages drawn up? “As required by law, the list is updated every 1st quarter of the year, based on objective data from the previous year: the number of vacancies declared to ADEM, the number of candidates registered for the same job and the number of vacancies declared for which it was not possible to find a candidate with the required profile”, explains the institution.
