Pokémon is one of the best-known and most widespread video game sagas on the planet. Since it was born in 1996 in Japan, the Nintendo IP has become the franchise that generates the most money: 90,000 million dollars. And, how could it be otherwise, this 2022 there will be a new installment… based in Spain.

On March 3, during a digital event, Nintendo announced that Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Purple would arrive at the stores by the end of 2022. Two new installments of the franchise that will present a new territory within the saga: Paldea.

Since these were announced, the Spanish community (playful and not so playful) has highlighted that this new continent is very similar to the Iberian Peninsula. And nothing is further from reality, as has been seen in a new advance. published last August 3, Paldea is an adaptation of Spain to the renowned saga. and it’s full of references to the country.

First, and where it is most obvious, is the map of the region. The design is a clear adaptation of Spain: a peninsula surrounded by a coast but with a mountain range in the northwest area; lakes where Galicia would be found, arid land where Extremadura would be located, the desert in the Almería area and even, as several users on social networks have pointed out in a comical key, «the pollution cloud in Madrid”.

But there are innumerable details that make Spain represented in this installment of Pokémon. In a screenshot of the game map, you can read “Cahíz Trail” as a reference to Cádiz and, near him. “Gruta Caleta”, which corresponds to La Caleta, the renowned Andalusian beach.

The central city, which is a mix between Madrid by name (Plateau City) and Barcelona, has different nods to Spanish architecture. More concretely, to Gaudi’s.

Throughout the entire city you can see tiles and tiles that imitate the colors and figures of the city of Barcelona. The headquarters of the academy (epicenter of the adventure) is also a reference to the La Modelo prison in Barcelona. At the same time, this building has details of the Holy Family Like the towers on the roof.

In addition to this, in the landscape and the map you will find dozens of other references. One of the Pokémon trainers, Grusha, is the gym leader of Sierra Napada, a name that refers to Sierra Nevada. An idea that is reinforced by Grusha’s clothing, that she wears ski clothes.

Another of the most outstanding references are the shields of each academy. Depending on the game, Scarlet or Purple, the main character will be in different schools: Orange in the case of Scarlet and Grape in the case of Purple. A clear reference to the iconic fruits so much is produced (and exported) in Spain.

And references to Spain are not only found on the ground, but also in the famous creatures. Although fans of the saga hope that there will be more new pokémon, some of those that have been shown so far are also references to Spanish cuisine.

The most prominent case in social networks is that of Smoliv: a small pokémon that is, literally, an olive

The most recent, and that has also given something to talk about, is that of Fidough. A “soft and moist pokémon that makes things around it ferment thanks to the yeast in its breath” and that reminds of muffin bread because of its ears. The most creative, yes, they compare it with the Lady of Elche.
