Ecuador‘s tourism sector will benefit from a VAT reduction on the holiday of May 24, 2024, in commemoration of the Battle of Pichincha.
Once the president, Daniel Noboa, decreed the reduction from 15% to 8% in the Value Added Tax (VAT) for tourist activities, the Ministry of the branch specified on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the scope of this measure which will be applied on the holiday for the Battle of Pichincha.
According to the authorities, the reduction of the VAT rate to 8% is part of the actions carried out by the Government to promote domestic tourism and boost the local economy.
The activities defined as tourist services for which the VAT rate reduction applies are:
Accommodation
Food and drinks
Transportation mainly dedicated to tourism, operation, intermediation and agencies
Tourist guide
Community tourism centers
Theme parks and stable attractions
Spas, hot springs and tourist recreation centers.
The establishments in the industry that may apply this reduction are those that have a tourist registration, which is obtained for free through the platform of the Intelligent Tourism System (Siturin). The VAT reduction will be applied during the holiday corresponding to the Battle. of Pichincha that includes Friday the 24th, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of May 2024.
