## Taxes on Olympic Medal Awards: Bruno Le Maire Promises Action
In an interview with Le Figaro, Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of Economy and Finance, addressed the tax on Olympic medal awards. He promised to propose their tax-exempt status in the upcoming 2025 budget. ”When we have such amazing results, these taxes should not be taxes,” he explained.
Decision in the Future
Le Maire, who resigned from his position, passed the reins to David Douillet. The former Olympic judo champion criticized the tax on medal winnings, calling the process “shameful.” He argued that athletes deserve exceptional treatment after years of sacrifice and effort. While Le Maire agreed, he stated that the final decision on tax exemption lies with the next majority in power.
According to Le Maire, the estimated tax burden on French athletes is significant. Gold medal winners receive a prize of 80,000 euros, while silver and bronze medalists receive 40,000 and 20,000 euros, respectively. These amounts are significantly higher than those awarded at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
