FOCUS – Fridge, washing machine, heating, air conditioner… Identifying which objects consume the most energy can lead to significant savings.

While energy prices are skyrocketing and everyone is called upon to be sober in anticipation of a harsh winter, all eyes are on everyday objects. Internet box, air conditioning, television, oven, hot water tank… So many devices that populate the homes of the French, and which, however, also represent significant expenses.

In July, the Ecological Transition Agency (Ademe) returned to the electricity consumption of these various devices, in order to determine which ones lengthen the bill the most. What to see which are the most greedy objects, and which one must pay the most attention to reduce his electricity bills.

The institution relied in particular on the results of its Panel ElecDom survey, which studies electricity consumption in the residential sector. The price is obtained, for its part, on the basis of EDF’s regulated tariff, in July 2022.

Unsurprisingly, heating remains the main electricity expense of a home, whether it is a house or an apartment, as well as the hot water tank. Their consumption, like their annual cost, is well above other appliances.

Air conditioning is not to be outdone: although its consumption may vary depending on the model, it is still much more energy-intensive than its alternatives: “A class A mobile air conditioner with a power of 2.5 kW represents more than 130 euros for 1 month of use and can consume up to 2.5 times more than a fixed air conditioner and nearly 30 times more than a fan“, underlines the Ademe.

Possible savings on a daily basis

The kitchen also has a number of items to keep an eye on, or even to replace by favoring newer and more efficient devices, whether it is the refrigerator, the dishwasher or the freezer. Also be careful with the dryer, which is particularly greedy, as well as… the television, which, even when switched off, consumes all the same. Better to unplug it or deactivate the power strip through which it works.

Another lesson: investing in new, more efficient equipment can save significant sums each year on the most heavily consuming devices, according to calculations by Ademe.

Other small gestures can also represent substantial savings over the longer term. Based on the list of devices that consume the most electricity among the French, Ademe suggests, for example, adjusting the temperature using a programmable thermostat, allowing “save up to 15% on heating».

Another avenue: turning off your devices rather than leaving them on standby allows you to achieve “up to 10% electricity savings“, an advice that applies in particular to chargers, computers and televisions.

RTE advice

This week, the electricity network manager, RTE, for its part suggested a few “eco-gesturesto households for this winter. Among these, individuals are encouraged to lower the heating, to limit lighting – for example by generalizing the use of low-energy light bulbs or by switching off unused lights – or even to moderate the use of cooking appliances. .

These small daily changes can lead to big savings, says the company: with good practices, energy consumption “for cooking only» can thus be reduced by 25%.
