Two historic supermarket brands are closing their doors.

Most of the French people do their shopping there every week. Supermarkets are an important part of the urban landscape. Certain brands, established for decades, even for many French people have the feeling of having grown up with them. However, a page in the history of mass consumption is changing with the closing of several historic stores.

In a few months, the brand with 61 supermarkets across France will drop the curtain and change its brand. Mainly established in the northeastern part of the country, the Cora brand will gradually disappear in the coming months. Established in France since 1969, the family business has sold its stores to a competitor with more resources: Carrefour.

From July 1, France’s second favorite distribution chain has become the owner of the brand and will make brand changes. All Cora supermarkets will become Carrefour supermarkets. This should happen by December 6, announced the CEO of Carrefour Republican East.

For consumers, the change will not only be visual. On the shelves too, products will change. Presumably, certain references offered only by Cora will disappear in favor of Carrefour brand products. The brand promises that this will reduce “at least 10% on nearly 3,000 products.”

But that’s not all. Other historic supermarkets will close their doors. Although some have already started to change their name, the new Casino market is destined to disappear in the coming months. After the sale of 300 stores from October 2023, 66 additional supermarkets were sold at the beginning of July and therefore will change the brand.

35 supermarkets (Casino or Casino Hyper Frais, formerly Géant) and 1 Spar will be converted to Intermarché and 28 supermarkets, as well as 2 drives, will be under the Auchan banner. The centenary green group will not stop there because another ten stores will also be sold in the coming months. The exact list of cities in question has not been released.
