Apple has introduced the iPhone 16 – and with it comes the new iOS 18. For which other phones the new operating system will soon be available for download.
With iOS 18, Apple will release a new version of its mobile operating system for iPhones. With the upcoming version, older devices will traditionally be phased out and will no longer receive support.
Apple will release its new mobile operating system on September 16th. The iPhone manufacturer confirmed this on its website.
The iPhone 16, which Apple introduced on Monday – click here for the announcement – will already have iOS 18 installed. Owners of all other cell phones can download and install the operating system.
Good news for iPhone owners who have installed iOS 17: If the current iOS is running on the devices, iOS 18 can also be installed. So nothing has changed in terms of compatible models.

Even if the devices get the new operating system, the AI functions presented by Apple on Monday will not run everywhere. To use “Apple Intelligence” you have to have an iPhone 16 – or at least an iPhone 15 Pro from last year. Even buyers of the cheaper iPhone 15 are left out.
Siri is getting smarter with iOS 18 and can do a lot more. “Apple Intelligence” integrates its own AI models and can edit text and images and perform actions. The function is designed to recognize the user’s context and thus answer requests such as: “Play the podcast my wife recommended yesterday”.
Not all AI functions are coming to Germany. So far, “Apple Intelligence” only works in English anyway. However, Apple announced additional languages for next year – including French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
Apple has so far been very strict about the arrangement of apps on the screen. There was little freedom. With iOS 18, apps can now be arranged completely freely on the home screen.
In addition, the icons can be displayed in their own colors. This means that the start screens can be designed much more individually.
