Former Indian cricketer and ex-India selector Krishnamachari Srikanth has discussed which players should and should not be included in the Indian squad for the ODI World Cup.
With the BCCI almost confirming the list of 20 players who are likely to feature in the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, Krishnamachari Srikanth has said that when looking at the players as a team selector leaving aside preferences, certain players must be in the squad and some players should not be in the squad.
Former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikanth has named two big players who should not be included in his India ODI World Cup squad. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named a potential 20-player squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. And the cricket board wants the management to rotate the players from the list in all their bilateral series in order to have a ‘core team’. Meanwhile, in a conversation with Star Sports, former cricketer Srikanth spoke in detail about the possible list.
Four medium fast bowlers are enough!
Cheika said he has four fast bowlers in his list and players who can single-handedly win matches. Deepak Hooda will be in my team. He keeps Hooda in his squad as he can be used as a part-time spinner between matches and is a player who can finish the match at the end.
As for the bowlers I will bring into the team, he said, “For my fast bowlers, four medium pacers, Jasprit Bumrah, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammad Siraj are enough. Mohammed Shami would be one such in that order. I speak as a head of selectors, not as a fan. I will bring Deepak Hooda. I believe they are the ones who will win the matches. What do you want? You want to win races and you need horses like Yusuf Pathan. They will be able to single-handedly win matches,” said former India selector Cheika.
These two players should not be included in the team!
Commented that “Shupman Gill and Shardul Thakur” should leave the team.
Speaking about this, he said, “Two players Subman Gill and Shardul Thakur will not be in my list.” Ever since skipper Rohit Sharma was rested after the T20 World Cup 2022, opener Shubman Gill has had his fair share of games. However, it remains to be seen whether the right-hander can be consistent in one-day form. He has been picked ahead of veteran Shikhar Dhawan for the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, pacer Shardul did not play in the recently concluded ODI series against Bangladesh and was not included in the squad for the 50-over match against Sri Lanka.
With India taking on Sri Lanka in ODIs on January 10, the road to the 50-over World Cup series has begun. Both the sides are expected to test the squads, which is expected to help identify some players for the World Cup.
