The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) activated phase 1 of regional contingency for PM2.5 particles in the southeast of the Mexico’s valley.

This zone includes the municipalities of Iztapalapa, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, and Valle de Chalco Solidaridad.

In a statement, CAMe specified that at 10:00 a.m. a value of 99.5 µg/m³ (micrograms per cubic meter) of PM2.5 particles was recorded at the Santiago Acahualtepec station, in the Iztapalapa mayor’s office, which corresponds to the Southeast of the Valley of Mexico.

The above, due to the fact that during the early hours between December 31 and January 1, extraordinary emissions occurred due to the massive burning of pyrotechnics and bonfires, which “increased the levels of particle pollution in different areas of the Valley of Mexico”.

These particles “tended to accumulate in the air, as a consequence of a combination of a high pressure system in the center of the country that generated atmospheric stability, in addition to weak wind during the night and morning, as well as the presence of thermal inversion” .

At 10:00 in the morning, the CDMX Air Quality Index registered very poor air quality due to PM2.5 particles, at the Santiago Acahualtepec station, while the risk level in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico is extremely high.

CONTINGENCY IS MAINTAINED

In its report this afternoon, the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAME) reported that the environmental contingency remains in the Southeast area of the Valley of Mexico, however, the population is asked to pay attention to the following communications.

The agency reported that concentrations of PM2.5 particles produced by the massive burning of pyrotechnics and bonfires remain high last night and early today.

The Regional Atmospheric Environmental Contingency due to PM2.5 particles maintains poor air quality during this day, so CAME will be attentive to the evolution of meteorological conditions.

The next statement will be at 8 pm to determine if Regional Phase I continues due to PM2.5 particles in the Southeast area of the Valley of Mexico or is lifted due to the decrease in pollution levels.

According to the Air Quality Index in Mexico City, the risk level remains at a high level with pollutants O3, PM10 and PM2.5 with an index of 170, so the population is recommended to avoid carrying out activities. outdoor.
