The Cuban Ministry of Culture (MINCULT) announced the appointment of journalist Alexis Triana Hernández as the new president of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry ICAIC.

A note published on the Cuba Cine portal indicated that this Thursday, November 9, Triana was presented as the new president of the ICAIC before the board of directors and workers of the institution.

The information, also shared in state media, highlights that the new director has “accumulated a long history as a cultural manager and promoter, beginning as president of the AHS in Holguín, president of the Provincial Council of the Performing Arts and later as provincial director of Culture of that province for 13 years.”

Triana is also founder of the International Festival of Artists and Cultural Promoters “Romerías de Mayo” and was vice president of the International Festival of Poor Cinema in Gibara, in the eastern Cuban province.

Triana’s appointment takes place at a time when the film institution is going through a period of crisis, unleashed mainly by controversies regarding censorship and the lack of autonomy of the audiovisual sector in Cuba.

In this sense, the MINCULT note states that “Triana assumes the presidency of the ICAIC at a time when the institution is working together with the creators in the preparation of the proposals that are being presented to the Temporary Working Group to attend to the development of the Cuban cinema.”

On the other hand, his work in Havana as vice president of the National Council of Performing Arts, director of Communication and founder of the Multimedial Studio and the digital channel CREARTV, as well as the Cadena Streaming Cuba in the MINCULT, stand out.

What does the Assembly of Cuban Filmmakers (ACC) say?

On October 30, the ACC Representative Group published a note on its Facebook profile explaining that “after four and a half months of the events that began the reactivation of this assembly, in June 2023, we are still without response to the first and main of our demands.”

As the text indicated, on October 18, the group of Representatives addressed a letter to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, which insisted on the aforementioned aspects and which was accompanied by several documents referring to the controversy such as a “List of films Cuban works censored or not exhibited in the last three decades”, a “Report on Production, Distribution and Exhibition in Cuba” and “The three official Declarations issued by the Assembly”, among others.

Furthermore, they state that “the Government has 30 business days to respond. The deadline is Wednesday, November 29.”

With silence as a response to the various complaints and public communications, the express request for a response to the violation of copyright and contractual agreements with the “La Habana de Fito” case and the delivery to the ICAIC of the result of the investigation in this regard. , the ACC assures that it continues to wait for Díaz-Canel’s response and “working towards a diverse cinema, with autonomy, free of exclusions, and for all Cubans, audiences and makers, regardless of where they reside.” .
