San Salvador. With 67 votes, not including those of the opposition, the Legislative Assembly approved this Tuesday, May 16, 30 more days of Exception Regime, to continue fighting gangs.

The opposition again denied their votes under the usual argument: the Exception Regime is a violation of the human rights of the innocent, as the FMLN deputy, Marleni Funes, maintained.

Both the Minister of Public Security, Gustavo Villatoro, and the Minister of Defense, Francis Merino, and the Director General of the PNC, Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, justified the validity of the Exception Regime due to the evident results.

They specifically referred to the noticeable drop in homicides, extortion and disappearances; in addition, the atmosphere of peace, the increase in tourist visits and the increase in events of various kinds in a framework of greater confidence, even in places once controlled by terrorist groups.

At the end of the nominal and public vote, as established by law in these cases, there were also six votes against and seven abstentions; in addition, four deputies were absent. While the Legislative Assembly was addressing the request for an extension, President Nayib Bukele assured on his social networks: “We will heal our country and we will completely eliminate this plague.”
