MEXICO CITY.- The Senate of the Republic unanimously approved a project to declare January 19 of each year as the “National Social Security Day”, in order to recognize this institution that is a leader and benchmark in matters of health at the international level.

The senators highlighted in the opinion that the Mexican Institute of Social Security has medical personnel of the highest quality and professionalism, with nearly half a million collaborators distributed throughout the country and who work every day to enhance it.

On January 19, 1943, the Social Security Law was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which served as the legal basis for creating the IMSS.

When presenting the project, Senator Gricelda Valencia de la Mora, president of the Social Security Commission, said that the objective is to commemorate the creation of the Mexican Social Security Institute, a public institution that is a bastion for the Mexican people.

Rafael Espino de la Peña, senator from Morena, highlighted that, 79 years after its creation, this Institute has 531 Family Medicine Units, 251 General Hospitals, 25 highly specialized medical units, 34 outpatient care units, 10 detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.

In addition, it manages 16 eye care centers, 18,774 consulting rooms, 1,119 operating rooms, 56,753 beds, of which 35,802 are registered, 19,18 are not registered, and 1,933 are for intensive care.

The Plenary also approved declaring September 6 of each year as the “National Social Security Day”, in order to recognize the innumerable and important efforts that each and every one of the institutions responsible for social security have undertaken and developed. from the country.

The proposal, endorsed with 69 votes, specifies that on September 6, 1929, the Decree amending article 123 of the Constitution was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which laid the foundations for the issuance of the Social Security Law.

This law, it is highlighted, includes insurance for disability, life, involuntary cessation of work, illness and accidents, among others, through which the exercise and safeguarding of the human right to social security of the population are guaranteed. Both documents were sent to the Chamber of Deputies.
