Dimitar Kalchev and Dimitar Mehandzhiyski are the Bulgarian beach volleyball champions for 2024. The two also became silver medalists at the Balkaniad in Moldova and are currently preparing for a new tournament in Turkey.
“We missed the first Balkaniad because we had no information about it – said Kalchev. – It was earlier in Turkey. The Balkan tournaments are local and very important to us. We do not compete with the top teams from Norway and Sweden, but a lot of points are awarded . They are important for us to participate in the future tournaments, where we are trying to break through. Without them, we are at the bottom of the qualifications.”
Beach volleyball has always been in the heart of the two best Bulgarian players. At this stage, they travel without coaches and staff, cook independently.
“When we became the champions of Bulgaria, the tournaments in our country ended,” Kalchev continues. we are gaining as much experience as possible at an acceptable distance. Our goal is to continue playing year-round and therefore we will not sign contracts with teams that play indoors.”
The president of the federation Lubomir Ganev promised Kalchev and Mekhandzhiyski that he would help with a camp in Brazil. The South American country is one of the most developed in beach volleyball. Ganev has repeatedly stated that Bulgaria must develop much faster in the sport, which made a splash at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer at the stadium in front of the Eiffel Tower.
“Bulgaria needs professional pairs and real beach volleyball – concluded Kalchev. – We hope that BF Volleyball will help us become competitive and the results will go up. Not only for us, but for everyone who wants to play beach volleyball volleyball.”
