Sixteen women petitioned the president Claudia Sheinbaum reconsider the appointment of Jorge Islas López as head of the newly created General Coordination of Consulates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
The above, because they indicate that they are alleged victims of workplace harassment, harassment and gender violence by the consul of Mexico in New York.
They say that at the time in which the current coordinator ofe Consuldos led the representation in New York: “Several of us, members of the Mexican Foreign Service and workers at the Consulate General, suffered constant harassment, harassment, and discrimination based on gender status by this man.”
They point out that during the five years that Lopez Islands held the position, despite the formal complaints against him, only simple recommendations were issued.
For its part, in a statement, Islas responded that “in response to the demonstrations of people who claim to have suffered workplace harassmentand having been forced to resign (…) I respond that in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs there is documentary evidence that contradicts said allegations.”
