  • A check on 24 Hours showed they were already marketing it to gamers – sharpening their senses and tasting like “sweet victory”
  • After 14 days of studies: Its use leads to thinning of the nasal mucosa, perforation of the septum, blockage of the airways

They banned the sale of the energy powder, better known as energy sniff, which is taken through the nose. The order was issued by the chairperson of the Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP), Maria Filipova. The reason is that the products pose a serious threat to the health and safety of consumers.

According to the National Center for Public Health and Analysis and the Expert Council on ENT Diseases, these products and their method of use by inhalation pose a risk. The experts’ study showed that the dosing methods and the amount of substances in one dose are not clear, and systemic use can lead to thinning of the nasal mucosa, perforation of the nasal septum and even blockage of the airways.

Therefore, the KZP decided to ban the energy powder and ordered it to be withdrawn from commercial establishments.

But what happens to the sites where you can order the sniff? One of them is Sniffbull, about which “24 chasa” wrote even before the scandal with the folk singer Diona, who advertised it. At that time, the page was one of the few that offered the energy powder for the price of BGN 16 for 1 gram. Today it has temporarily suspended its activity, but according to the owner “due to exhausted availability”.

Shortly after “24 Chasa” reported on the new trend among young people, and the singer Diona released a video advertising the sniff, the institutions took action, but instead of being alarmed, the distributors found a new niche in the Internet space. A check on “24 Hours” showed that they now offer the powdered energy drink to be dissolved in water, not snorted through the nose. A media inquiry found a site that sells nutritional supplements for athletes, but also offers an energy powder advertised for “every gamer” because it sharpens their senses. It is sold in a pack of 10 and costs BGN 5.50.

“It tastes like a sweet victory, even though it contains almost no sugar,” the sellers describe it. mainly by athletes who want to improve their physical and mental performance before any sports competition. The nervous system is responsible for controlling the movement and therefore affects the reaction time, which is important in every game.In addition, niacin along with vitamin B6 and B12 contribute to the reduction of fatigue and exhaustion. They accumulate especially during prolonged games that require 100% of your attention. All you have to do is mix it with water and start the game the energy drink is suitable for professional as well as novice gamers,” the distributors added on their page.

They advise their customers to mix 10g of the product with 350 – 500ml of water before drinking it, but advise them not to exceed the daily dose. They do not specify what the consequences will be otherwise.

Before “24 hours”, medical specialists warn that the ordered energy drinks in powder form, both for nasal intake and those that dissolve in water, are dangerous, since their exact content is not clear. The same opinion was shared by the Minister of Health Galya Kondeva: The use of energy powder is not safe. It can lead to injury to the nasal mucosa, and in certain cases to the cessation of breathing. We do not have specific data on the content, but rather on the dosage. Repeated use can have very adverse effects on users. We have informed the CPC and they have taken the necessary measures to ban the product, she added, clarifying that the sniff probably entered the country without the need for prior assessment as it is not a food or food additive.

From the official announcement of the Consumer Protection Commission, it became clear that notifications will also be sent to the European Rapid Alert System SAFETY GATE. This means that Bulgaria will send a signal with information about the type of product identified as dangerous in our country, as well as the measures we have taken to stop it. All signals to SAFETY GATE reach authorities in other countries to monitor the same product in their own market.

The chairperson of the KZP, Maria Filipova, called on all consumers who bought the energy sniffer to stop using it immediately.
