Although there are still a few days left until the start of the academic year, the building of the Magda Szabó Member Institution of the István Bocskai Reformed Education Center was filled with cheerful children on Monday and Tuesday. In accordance with tradition, the Reformed school welcomed its youngest students on the so-called Children’s Days.

Two new first classes are starting in September, and with the exception of one or two children, the program at the beginning of the week was fully staffed – we learned from Márta Farkas, the director of the institution. As he said, the Children’s Days are organized so that the nerds get used to the school framework; they learn what and where they find in the building; get to know their teachers and classmates. He also noted that the majority of their first-graders are not entering the school’s gates for the first time, as they also participated in their first-year programs during the previous academic year, only then as kindergarteners in a large group. That’s why we weren’t surprised at how directly and affectionately the first graders greeted the headmistress when they passed us in the corridor on the Tuesday morning of Csibenapok.

At this time, the teachers try to provide new experiences for the little ones with playful activities, they perform different tasks, which help them to tune in to school. Twenty-two students will attend class 1.a. They will attend daycare and will learn computer science in an increased number of hours during their elementary school years – at first they will only start with one hour a week. Class 1b consists of twenty-four students. This is their home school class, which means that they will have classes in the morning and in the afternoon, distributed proportionally (without burdening them). They are English majors, so one English lesson per week is already included in their timetable. Márta Farkas said that they teach with a two-teacher model, which actually means that a class has two teachers-headmasters. One of the advantages of this is that teaching colleagues can share tasks among themselves. During our visit on Tuesday, not only the community of the smallest children was present at the school, but also the class teachers of the other lower classes, who were busy beautifying and decorating their classrooms in order to surprise their students with it for the beginning of the school year.
