They clean up other people’s dirt

Berlin-KreuzbergBottle cap over bottle cap. At some point the world will be paved with bottle caps throughout; above it a soft carpet of cigarette butts. To roam through the green space between the Wassertorplatz and Urbanhafen in Kreuzberg with wooden tongs in the right and a blue sack in the other and to face the plague means: shouting like against a biblical swarm of locusts.

We do the cleaning – about ten men and women from the neighborhood followed the call of the Luisenstadt Citizens’ Association. A seven-year-old is also there. The Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) provides brooms, rubbish grabs, sacks and gloves and, above all, it picks up the rubbish after the action.
