A recent investigation carried out by a team of scientists from several French universities and observatories affirms that the Moon has the same solid inner core as the Earth’s.
As explained by the researchers National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Côte d’Azur University, the Côte d’Azur Observatory, the Sorbonne University and the Paris-PS Observatory to the journal Nature, the solid inner core of the Moon is about 500 kilometers in diameterwhich is equivalent to 15% of its size.
To carry out the work, the team collected data of various space missions and from the reach of laser lunarwhich, in addition to this great discovery, allowed them to affirm the hypothesis that accounts for the movement of material within the mantle-the intermediate layer between the nucleus and the cortex-, during the evolution of the Luna.
“This is known as the turning over of the lunar mantleand helps to explain the presence of elements rich in hierro on the surface of the Luna”, explained the scientists.
“Although different methods related to the rotation of the Lunahad allowed us to clearly identify the fluid outer core, the solid core remained undetectable until now, due to its small size,” they added.
Finally, the researchers also discovered the existence of materials rich in hierro in the lunar crust.
