Just six days after the Vizcaya Football Federation launched an impressive audiovisual campaign called ‘Hau ez da zure lekua/This is not your field’ with which it seeks to make fans aware of the importance of promoting sporting values and a safe environment in the stadiums, the scourge of violence has once again splashed the playing fields of the province. This time, the most serious events occurred at the Soloarte facilities, in Basauri, in the duel between the Ariz locals and Uritarra B on Sunday –the penultimate day of group two of Territorial Segunda–. The target of the wrath of the stands and also of one of the players on the host bench was once again the arbitration body.

In fact, the referee, as stated in the minutes, launched the RFEF anti-violence protocol at halftime in the face of “the insults and death threats from a part of the stands” both towards him and one of his assistants. After informing the field delegate of the situation, Ariz told the public over the public address system to give up this type of unsportsmanlike attitude but, apparently, it did not help much. Finally, the referee decided to stop the game in the 81st minute and request the police presence.

The atmosphere was quite tense. The host team was playing for promotion, losing 0-2 and finding themselves in numerical inferiority after the expulsion of two outfield players, in addition to another who was on the bench. The Basauritarra club, in fact, has decided to remove this last footballer immediately for “insults and unacceptable behavior towards the referee,” said the president of Ariz, Pablo Paramás. After almost three-quarters of an hour of waiting and given the impossibility of guaranteeing the safety of the refereeing team, the decision was made to evacuate the venue – some 700 people – and resume the match behind closed doors.

It didn’t end there. According to the minutes, after the crash, the referee had to be escorted to his vehicle “in the presence of fans with Ariz badges outside the field.” From the Basauritarra entity they “reject” and “regret what happened”, although they qualify that “everything has been oversized.” «Nobody waited for the referee. The Municipal Police accompanied him to his vehicle by protocol, “said Paramás.

spit in ear

“We strongly denounce any unsportsmanlike attitude. In the game there were players from lower categories and that example cannot be given, but in the stands of any field there can be some hotheaded and the clubs do not have the capacity to control everything, “said the Ariz chief executive. These serious altercations will not be the only ones that the Competition Committee of the Biscayan Federation will have to deal with today. And it is that, in Orozko, in the duel between Atxulaur A and Umore Ona, one of the attendees also received threats and “a spit in the ear”, according to the arbitration report.

The match was stopped “until the person who caused the altercation was expelled from the venue,” they pointed out from the Biscayan Federation. Despite the awareness campaigns, the episodes of violence “are repeated almost every weekend” and the situation “is really worrying,” acknowledged the president of the highest territorial federative body, Iñaki Gómez Mardones, who does not rule out “drastic measures” in case that “things continue along these paths”, he advanced.

One of the alternatives being considered is the dispute of matches behind closed doors in some categories because “it is in grassroots football where more incidents are recorded and more worrying as it is a stage of training in values,” Mardones acknowledged. Recently, in fact, several youth category players were sanctioned with six months of punishment for violent behavior in the match between Mungia and Otxarkoaga. This unsportsmanlike current has also caused “an important group of referees to have expressed their intention to leave it,” Mardones said. The situation requires deep reflection.
