The Financial Managers of the mayor’s office of San Salvador were in charge of explaining this Wednesday to the Municipalism Commission of the Legislative Assembly about the increase in municipal rates, in force for a few weeks.

Gino Bettaglio, Financial Manager of the commune, reiterated that this is a tariff “scare” that has not been done since 2009. He justified that some services such as public lighting required a modification due to the continuous increases in the price of electricity.

He added that the cost of the minority card, which was previously $0.57 cents, is now $6 because it includes a modern, laminated document with a photo.

Guillermo Jeréz, also from the Mayor’s Finance area, pointed out that other tax changes include the taxation of Bingos and an increase in fees for “harmful activities” such as breweries.

After the explanation of the municipal officials, the FMLN regretted that the mayor of the capital, Norman Quijano, did not attend the commission.

“It is a lack of respect from the mayor, not to the commission but to the citizens. He has neither courage nor willingness to face this problem,” said deputy Carlos Cortez.

Carlos Reyes, ARENA deputy, defended the decision of the Municipal Council, alleging that the rates have been used in projects and services for the residents of the capital.

On the other hand, a group of people protested in the Legislative Assembly in rejection of the rate increase. According to them, the authorities did not carry out an adequate study or consultation.

They detailed that the increase in some services has been 200%, but Bettaglio asked to analyze the cases by denying that the rate adjustment has that percentage.
