On September 12, a confrontation between students from the General Francisco Menéndez National Institute (INFRAMEN) and the National Industrial Technical Institute (INTI) left several young people injured in the vicinity of the Don Rúa circle, in San Salvador. The incidents, which began as a dispute between the groups, have brought to light the existence of a new criminal structure called “The Race”which operates under its own hierarchy, using gang signs and graffiti.
This Thursday, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) presented to the Fourth Court against Organized Crime a formal request for the 20 young people involved to remain under provisional arrest while investigations continue.

The FGR has identified that all the accused belong to this new criminal structure, which follows a model of gang-like organizationwith its own jargon and levels of command. Of the 20 detained, 14 will be prosecuted for public disorderwhile 7 face additional charges of serious injury.
The hearing for those involved is scheduled for next Monday, September 30, where the request for the FGR to keep them in prison while a thorough investigation is carried out the magnitude of this new threat in the capital’s schools.
