A man in the US suffering from frequent migraines received a surprising diagnosis. The 52-year-old man visited his doctor after his usual migraines worsened and the pills he often used had already stopped working, the BBC reported.

His scan reveals that he actually has tapeworm eggs in his brain. Doctors say it is caused by poor hand hygiene. According to them, he may have also eaten undercooked bacon.

Cysticercosis is a type of infection caused by the eggs or larvae of the parasite Taenia solium, also known as pork tapeworm. Eating undercooked pork cannot directly cause cysticercosis in a person.

The case was reported in the medical journal American Journal of Case Reports. The experts wrote that it “can only be speculated” that the man’s cysticercosis was transmitted by autoinfection after “improper hand washing”. Given his “propensity for undercooked pork,” his doctors assumed he contracted the tapeworm himself, bTV reported.

The patient with a severe headache responded to antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory medication and has since made a full recovery.
