In the capital’s “St. Nedelya” cathedral, a memorial service was held today for the victims of the serious attack that took place on this day in 1925, reported the Sofia Metropolis.
The divine service was led by His Eminence Bishop Polycarp of Belogradchik, Vicar of the Metropolitan of Sofia, together with Archimandrite Vasiliy – Protosingel of the Metropolitan of Sofia, with Archimandrite Euthymius – Spiritual Supervisor of the Diocese of Sofia, with Stavrophore’s Steward Nikolay Georgiev – Chairman of the Church Board of the Cathedral Metropolitan Church “Holy Sunday”, with staurophoric butler Kiril Popov, staurophoric butler Nikolay Tsurev, with butler Petar Slavov, with archpriest Dimitar Shumov, with priest Nikola Chochev, with hierodeacon Polycarp and with deacon Julian Perikliev.
“On April 16, 1925, a tragic Maundy Thursday, the funeral of General Konstantin Georgiev, who was killed two days earlier, was followed by a new act of terrorism – 134 people died in the attack, and about 500 were injured, some of whom died later from their wounds and so the number of victims exceeds 200. Among them are many representatives of the old Bulgarian national elite, many of the dead are innocent women and children. The assassination was carried out by a group of far-left operatives of the Military Organization of the Bulgarian Communist Party blew up the roof of the church “St. “Sunday” in Sofia, the message says.
In his speech after the mourning service, Bishop Polycarp said: “We prayed that God would forgive those who died as well as those who died from their wounds after the attack. We also pray that this heinous attack, which is considered the biggest attack in our history, will never happen again. We pray that God will give wisdom to all who want to achieve their goals with a good example, with brotherly love, with trust. Those communists then desecrated the most sacred, faith and human life, unfortunately after a few decades the whole of Bulgaria was enveloped in this darkness, in which human life was not respected, nor human deeds, nor human faith. Unfortunately, we all change according to the times and often forget what has passed in order to accept that , which is offered to us, and it is at the price of blood, of murders, of evil deeds that man alone cannot bear. When we remember this act of aggression and murder in this temple, we also remember God’s mercy , with which He gives everyone what is necessary for salvation and eternal life, but also gives everyone the chance to open their eyes and see what is invisible in order to prosper. Let us, praying for the souls of the terrorist act in the temple 99 years ago and for the well-being of the world, let us pray especially for those who lead the human multitudes – to know as it is written in the Holy Scriptures,” writes BTA.
