The Coordinating Commission of National Institutes of Health and High Specialty Hospitals (CCINSHAE) and the Digital Agency for Public Innovation (ADIP) of Mexico City signed a historic agreement. The result allowed the installation of free internet in institutes and hospitals in the Tlalpan area of the country’s capital for the benefit of 10 thousand people, including patients, companions and medical personnel.

Improve the experience of patients and their companions

During the ceremony of the symbolic delivery of 208 free access points, which took place at the National Cancer Institute (INCan), the head of the CCINSHAE, Gustavo Reyes Teránpointed out that the launch of the free connectivity network will substantially improve the stay of family members and people who wait for news of their patients who come and pass through the facilities of these medical units every day.

He highlighted that free internet will contribute to making the care that patients, friends and family receive more complete, warmer and better.

The director of the ADIP of the government of Mexico City, José Antonio Peña Merino, highlighted that these actions mainly benefit the most disadvantaged population who have lower income levels. It is more likely for people to communicate with their family members by mobile phone, since the majority have a mobile device, so free internet accessibility represents a tangible, direct and immediate benefit.

The director of ADIP explained that when a person does not have access to the internet, they are deprived of the right to communication, especially when they have the need to keep family members informed of the patients’ health condition.

The general director of (INCan), Óscar Gerardo Arrieta Rodríguezmaintained that internet connectivity is essential because people who accompany patients spend a lot of time in waiting rooms for consultation or to undergo studies or procedures, so the implementation of this program constitutes a benefit.

Which Mexican hospitals now have free internet?

The benefited institutes are: the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán” (INCMNSZ), with 38 Wi-Fi points; the “Juan N. Navarro” Children’s Psychiatric Hospital (HPIJNN), with 29 points; the National Cancer Institute (INCan), with 25; the General Hospital “Dr. Manuel Gea González” (HGEA), with 26; the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases “Dr. Ismael Cosío Villegas” (INER), with 25; the “Ignacio Chávez” National Institute of Cardiology, with 38; and the Psychiatric Hospital “Dr. Fray Bernardino Álvarez”, with 27.

The collaboration between CCINSHAE and ADIP will seek to continue advancing so that, in the near future, connectivity coverage can be strengthened to the facilities of the National Institute of Pediatrics (INP), the Children’s Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Federico Gómez” (HIMFG) and the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga” (HGM), in a second stage.

The service is available with the identifier “CDMX-Internet for everyone.” Currently, Mexico City has 31,874 points with free Wi-Fi distributed in the 16 municipalities, in order to bring the free service closer to spaces of influx and stay of citizens and visitors.

The project called “Free WiFi in Mexico City” It consists of enabling free Wi-Fi access points in different public places to reduce the digital divide.
